Edison Blanks made after 1897 have double spiral cores, early North American Blanks have a single spiral and more pronounced left end, while later Edison blanks and Brown wax records, the left end ends more abruptly.
A soluble wax core insert to be used in making a wax replica of a hollow metal jewelry ring has an inner round radius design and an arcuate portion having an arcuate extent of at least 140°. The soluble wax core insert is formed by molding in a metal mold. Once formed, the core insert is placed in another metal mold and a plastiwax is introduced into and fills a cavity around the core insert.

By 1889 the cylinders were made of acetate of alumina dissovled in sodium hydroxide and water, which was added to melted stearic acid, sodium carbonate was also added, making a metallic aluminum/sodium soap.
The composition of cylinders varies greatly within this time period -- from tinfoil covered metal tubes to molded wax to celluloid (a type of plastic). The method of recording remained constant; however; cylinders, like early discs, were recorded using an acoustic-mechanical process.
